NOTE: Two years after I wrote this review, I am overjoyed that a DVD version is finally available. Hopefully, this film will now receive the recognition and appreciation it clearly deserves. I have nothing to revise in the review which follows.

I saw this film when it was first released in 1960 and saw it again recently, charmed as before by the myth line and the qualified acting under Fred Zinnemann’s colorful direction. Here’s the situation: Ida (Deborah Kerr) and Paddy (Robert Mitchum) Carmody and son Sean (Michael Anderson, Jr.) are sheep drovers in Australia in the 1920s, proceeding from one job to the next. Ida and son yearn to determine down permanently somewhere (anywhere, really) whereas Paddy prefers itinerant roaming. Along the scheme, they encounter Rupert Venneker (Peter Ustinov), a worn sea captain with aristocratic sensibilities. Most of the film focuses on their tenure on the Halstead ranch during which they become friends with Mrs. Firth (Glynis Johns), an innkeeper to whom Venneker is coyly attracted. During the course of the film, not noteworthy happens, really. Its great charm is generated by the developing relationships between and among the lead characters.

Others have praised this film for marvelous reasons of their fill. Here are mine. First, there is broad and authentic human interest in the differences between Ida’s and Paddy’s contradictory definitions of “home.” For lack of better terms, between settling down and racy on. Also, in collaboration with Zinnemann, Jack Hildyard enriches the development of the myth with cinematography which is compellingly, indeed exquisitely appropriate to that time and set. Finally, all of the lead actors seem perfectly matched with the roles they play…especially Mitchum.

Briefly, I now part some thoughts about him, first because he invests Paddy with a wholesome appeal which was for me unexpected, given the Mitchum persona as in Night of the Hunter (1955) and Home from the Hill (also 1960) and then, years later, in his portrayals of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Glowing (1975) and The Sizable Sleep (1978) . His understated, highly-disciplined portrayal of Paddy is comparable with Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Warren Schmidt. Although Kerr and Johns received an Academy Award nomination, Mitchum did not. I have always idea he was under-appreciated as an actor.

Set in the 1920s and about a family of Irish itinerant sheepherders, this film has panoramic views of Australia (cinematography by Jack Hildyard), a ample script, and a diverse and enchanting cast; the sheep also are terrific, and there are many glimpses of kangaroos, koalas and more, all status to an upbeat secure by Dimitri Tiomkin. The film also shows the backbreaking labor of shearing the sheep, and the hard life and hard drinking of the people who do it.
It has its fragment of drama, poignancy, and humor, the latter usually thanks to Peter Ustinov, who puts in another memorable performance as a British wanderer who is always able to extricate himself from romantic entanglements.
Deborah Kerr shines as Ida, the tough but sensitive wife who stands by her man through thick and thin (mostly thin) . Robert Mitchum is noble as her irresponsible husband, as is Michael Anderson Jr. as their son, and Glynis Johns adds her irrepressible charm as a pub owner.

Though not quite on the level of director Fred Zinnemann’s best work (like “High Noon”, “A Man for all Seasons”, and “Day of the Jackal”), it composed has his masterful touch, and is a graceful film, well worth viewing.
It was nominated for Best Actress, Relate, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actress (Johns), losing out to Elizabeth Taylor in the first category, and “The Apartment” and “Elmer Gantry” in the rest.
“The Sundowners” is solid entertainment from one of the vast directors of the 20th century, and total running time is 133 minutes.

Customer Reviews:

Liked Them So Much I Bought Two Sets5
I own two GHD extra wide ceramic straighteners. I bought the first one a few years ago in the UK. I wear my hair long and try to keep it in the best condition possible so I’m really cautious about what I use on it. These ceramic plates are the best. Yup. Better than Chi or Sedu. I loved mine so much that I bought a second pair for use when I’m in America…my previous ones running off European voltage. Worth the money. But be sure to buy a good sealer. And like any super heating tools, don’t overuse.

Best flat iron ever!5
I had previously bought the smaller GHD IV(1-inch styler) at Sephora, but returned it because: (1) it was too much $$$, and (2) it rolled on its side when I put it down on the vanity.
I am glad that I got the wider version on Amazon.com because I got a better price (although the price on Amazon.com has increased $40 since I bought it 2 days ago…), and since it is flat, it does not roll when I put it down.
I am able to get my hair stick straight or curl it for more volume (watch the instructional videos on GHD’s website, as this model does not include the DVD). I am able to style my hair very quickly with only 1 pass, so my hair is not exposed to long periods of heat (like with a hair dryer). It is not a heavy styler, so your arms won’t get tired either.
I was also able to register it on GHD’s website, so this product is legit. Like other reviewers of this brand have written, make sure you buy from Amazon.com and not a third party. That way if the registration does not go through, you can return it hassle-free to Amazon.com.

Happy!5
I agree with all of the other positive reviews. Unfortunately, for me, it still takes 50 minutes or so to iron my thick, long hair. However, this iron straightens much easier than any iron I have had, cheap or expensive. It made the process much more simple. I do not have to go over the hair very many times. I also don’t dread straightening my hair anymore!

Last week, I saw “That Thing You Do!” on one of the cable movie channels. I had not seen it for a while and had a couple of hours staring me down, so I sat help and watched it. The film itself is a nice allotment of work by Mr. Hanks. He did himself proud. And that song! What a catchy, get-under-your-skin-in-your-brain pop tune!

Then, two days later, I was in Best Prefer (humming That Thing You Do, by the device) and this unusual edition DVD appears before me unexpectedly, on sale. Without thinking, I bought it, took it home and I have watched it three times since (the theatrical release, once and the extended version, twice) and I will peep many times more.

This modern release of That Thing You Do! underscores why “The Director’s Nick” genre in DVD releases has become so invaluable to film aficionados like myself.

Buy,Download, Or Stream That Thing You Do! - Tom Hank’s Extended Cut! Click Here

The theatrical version is priceless (detached), but the “Director’s Carve” is wonderful and a major revelation. So many gaps in the space have been filled in (gaps that I wasn’t even aware of, so well put-together was the recent version) . This newer version has made the film a mini-masterpiece.

As in the unusual, the cast is gracious, the location is believable and charming, the performances are comical, vibrant, true-to-life, and in this version, quite poignant.

Charlize Theron’s character, Tina, and her relationship with Guy, in particular, suddenly become crucial elements to the early set development (she is a minor character in the unusual version) . Her character is fleshed-out, and she has one HYSTERICAL scene (in the dentist’s chair) that caught me so off-guard with its humour, that I nearly choked to death with laughter!!

Even Tom Hanks character as the group’s manager, Mr. White, becomes more developed and there is an provocative scene and dialogue when the group is in Los Angeles at “the same hotel Lucy and Ricky stayed at” between Guy (who is gently drunk), Mr. White and a guy named Lloyd.

Even The Bass Player (the Wonder’s bass player who is never given a name), played by the adorable Ethan Embry, has a scene or two not in the unusual film that adds to the sweetness of his character (as well as some sly sexiness) .

Liv Tyler’s role as Jimmy’s girlfriend, Faye, becomes even more developed and she is such a advantageous actress in this film. She really is the heart and soul of the movie, and the newer version only adds to her fabulous mystique in this film.

And of course, Steve Zahn as Lenny, is serene as comic as ever and is the one band member who has no alarm to “push the envelope” and rider the roller-coaster of success to wherever it takes them.

I recommend this modern version of “That Thing You Do!” whole-heartedly. Whether it is the new or the extended-cut, it is a engrossing, engrossing, upbeat and thoroughly savory viewing experience.

And, I am Mild humming “That Thing You Do!”

This is a palatable movie, probably unlike any you’ve ever seen. All the characters are so well balanced and adorable, and their record is so well told that it makes you feel it’s a accurate fable about valid people. It’s refreshing, sweet, keen and charming.

A group of friends puts together a music band and they picture a song. The song gets on the radio and hasty climbs the music charts, making them an overnight success. Their unexpected and speedy growing fame puts their relationships, as well as individual integrity and self-respect, to the test. Troubles arise, and with them the characters demonstrate their lawful natures, qualified and abominable, making their musical career as a rock group as brief and ephemeral as lightning.

But despite the obstacles the characters face, a few suited things gain from them, novel relationships are formed, worn ones are strengthened, and all the characters build the choices that allow them to successfully follow their dreams after having lived through a life-changing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The catch of the film is colossal and the songs are moral to the style and the music of the sixties, which is the period in which the movie takes residence. The clothing and sets are right and the characters are wonderfully adapted to the fads of the time. The writing, area and dialogues are superbly well done (by Tom Hanks) and makes each and every character advance alive, even those with objective a few minutes of cover time. The cast is exquisitely chosen, including Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler and Tom Hanks, and their performances are natural and savory.

This movie is a delight to leer time and again; each time you’ll perceive unique details from the richly layered, yet realistic and simple personality of each character. A must-buy for anyone who likes a movie that tells a high-quality fable through the eyes of engaging and refreshing characters.

Inside a grim cramped room in the empty countryside somewhere east of the Berlin wall an East German agent is interrogating a defecting British contemplate. The defector is anxious and weary. He wants his money now. Prompting the Communist agent to say this : “You are a traitor, the lowest currency of the icy war. We choose you, we sell you, we lose you, we can even shoot you. Not a bird in the trees would lunge if we did honest that.”

Except that Alec Leamas(Richard Burton) is not really a defector, he is only masquerading as one. On his last assignment for the British Secert Service, he is to pretend to be burnt out and jobless. Never faraway from a bottle he walks around the streets of London cynical and dismal, his “masterstroke” in this act is an gross fight with a shopkeeper who refuses to give him credit. This ofcourse attracts the attention of the East German agants who opinion him as a potential defector because of his dire need for cash and his embitterment towards the British Agency for abandoning him. It is a credit to Burton’s shining and painfully realistic performance that you are sparkling certain his embitterment in not entirely an act. That he really is a drunk. That he wholeheartedly agrees with the German when he calls him “the lowest currency of the cool war”, even if he is not a defector. To him, all spies, on both sides, are scum.

John Le Carre was an ex-British intelligence officer when he wrote the eminent current on which this film was based. It was called “the finest glimpse myth ever written” by the writer of The Third Man, Graham Greene. And in a sense, The Gawk Who Came In From The Icy starts where The Third Man left off. The lead character has already lost any faith he had in humanity. I suspect that the only reason Leamas hadn’t really defected is because even money has lost its lure. Surprisingly the most sympathetic characters in the book(and the film) are the communist sight Fiedler(Oskar Werner) and naive communist librarian Liz Gold(renamed Nan Perry in the film and played by Claire Bloom), and both pay dearly for it. In the world of The Sight Who Came In From The Chilly idealism is not merely misguided, it is pathetic. When Fiedler sincerely asks Leamus “How do you sleep at night without a philosophy? “. Leamus’s typically jaded respond is “I don’t absorb in God or Karl Marx. I don’t fill in anything that rocks the world. I reserve the upright to remain ignorant.”

In adapting the unique, scripters Paul Dehn and Guy Trosper retained the cold restraint of the unique. Director Martin Ritt(who made the better known but outrageous Norma Rae) shoots the film in a harsh dismal and white. Accompanied by a unlit violin salvage, The Witness Who Came In From The Chilly is finally a sentimental film about unsentimentality. Ridiculously Burton lost out on the Oscar infavour of Lee Marvin in the frankly ridiculous Cat Ballou. The film was nominated for objective one other Oscar which was for Art-Direction. A shame. With its correct and asthetic complexity, this is as far away from Bond or Tom Clancy based thrillers as you can gather. Possibly the greatest film in its genre, and in its gain collected diagram the equal of The Third Man. The final message being that people who are driven enough to enter the world of espionage are not(and can’t afford to be) driven by ideals. In that world the only motive is expediency.

Richard Burton’s brooding performance coupled with appropriately grim shadowy and white photography from cameraman Oswald Morris provide fair the suited mood as the masterpiece thriller from primitive British intelligence operative John Le Carre was brought to the cover in 1965 with satisfactory fidelity.

While a British production, the film’s director was American Martin Ritt, an accomplished master of providing films of compelling seriousness with a touch of the grim, as exemplified by “No Down Payment”, “Hud” and “The Front.” Burton plays an intelligence operative gone to seed, hence the reference to “coming out of the chilly” which, in see talk, involves being taken out of the field of operation. Burton goes to planned seed, becoming an alcoholic who ultimately is thrown into prison for pummeling a thoroughly decent London grocer who had extended him credit and ultimately had to scheme the line, incurring Burton’s well orchestrated rage in accordance with plans from MI5.

As soon as Burton leaves prison Michael Hordern is waiting for him. They discuss “doing articles,” a camouflage for what is really expected, turning allegiance and going to work for the Soviets. During this period Burton is provided with a job at a runt library featuring psychic works. It is here that he meets Claire Bloom, an ideologue who attends local Communist leer groups as a method of making a disagreement in a worried world.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Spy Who Came in from the Cold! Click Here

Burton operates in a realm of barely contained rage. He inveighs Hordern with scorn and is not about to disagree with Oskar Werner when the East Germany Communist ideologue refers to Burton and his ilk as “the lowest currency of the Cool War.”

Burton’s contempt for his role in a grimy affair is enhanced by the fact that he has been sent to East Germany to distinct Peter Van Eyck of charges that he is a double agent working for Britain. Werner has shrewdly pegged him, and British intelligence does all it can to assist a ruthless individual it took charge of after he murdered a man on a shuffle to England during an East German traveling trade expose. Eventually Bloom surfaces as a prop to abet the gross Van Eyck.

More twists and turns occur until ultimately Burton wonders impartial what the future holds for him, and whether Bloom, the only person he cares for in life, will be portion of it. Circumstances ultimately reply essential questions for Burton as he is propelled through a swirl of events masterminded by wily intelligence operatives to his ultimate destiny.

This is a spectacularly temperamental giant of a film. Guy Troper and Paul Rehn fashioned a smart script which meshes with Le Carre’s chilling suspense masterpiece. “Examine” was a deserving recipient of a Best Film British Academy Award. It bristles with controlled rage and sizzling wit delivered with the favorable measure of acid by Burton in one of his enduring roles.

I can behold most people’s contention in that the packaging is a miniature misleading (even though there’s a narrate of Limited Red Riding Rabbit, it’s not included here) . For the cartoons alone, this collection deserves 4 stars, which is why I’m giving it that. It has One Froggy Evening (featuring the singing and dancing frog- “Hello m’baby, hello m’darling, hello m’ragtime gal!”), The Three Shrimp Bops (featuring Shorty Rogers and comedian Stan Freberg), Stagedoor Cartoon (one of the immense Elmer and Bugs high-tail cartoons), Expose Biz Bugs (”I can only do it once!”) and What’s Opera Doc (”Ruin the wabbit, end the wabbit!”), as well as the unique Porky in Wackyland (”Yes, I’m really the last of the do-do’s! Dodododododododo!”), The broad Piggybank Robbery (a hilarious Dick Tracy satire) and quite a few Tweety and Sylvester cartoons (All Abirrrd is hilarious with the boxed bulldog constantly punching Sylvesteron the assure, as well as Gift Wrapped, one of the few Christmas cartoons WB produced, Ain’t She Tweet, where Sylvester has to procure across several bulldogs to salvage to Tweety and Tweety Pie, the 1st Sylvester/Tweety cartoon) . I have no scrape with this budgetized version as long as people know that’s fair what it is (the only extra’s you accept feature drawings of Bugs, Yosemite Sam, the Road Runner and J Michigan Frog) . Now if they’re going to do that, they should include a budgetized version of the Bugs Bunny DVD and the Road Runner DVD as well. If you want it all, go steal The Golden Collection, which has all the cartoons on this one and more (plus extra’s) . But if your budget is extreme, you might deem this one.

It’s cost effective, yes. But Looney vol. 2 Spotlight Collection is in actuality - discs 3 and 4 of the Gold Region without any of the extras. There is a short feature on disc 1 on how to map the characters and a short on disc 2 where you animate some musical number…In essence - there are a LOT of Tweety cartoons and then a hodge podge of Bugs and Elmer etc….Disc 1 of the 4 state has Bugs cartoons and Disc 2 is mainly Road Runner, so if you aren’t a mammoth fan of those then the 2 disc situation could be the diagram to go. One plus is that What’s Opera Doc and One Froggy Evening are included…

Customer Reviews:

Good equipment4
I purchased this computer for my son for Christmas. I was a bit apprehensive to buy a touch screen for him, but I went for it. I don’t regret my decision. This computer is very compact, but powerful. I considered buying the MSI computer but was not available. The only thing I miss is the CD/DVD drive that MSI does has. I was able to calibrate the touch screen without any problems. Its comes with Windows XP and ASUS quick reference program, that is worth it.I am going to upgrade this computer buying the external CD/DVD drive that is offer here at Amazon. I don’t have any complains yet, I am very happy with my purchase and my son loves it.

Not yet ready for prime time…3
I bought this to be used as a front desk computer for a hotel that I own, and while it seems to be a pretty cool computer, the touch screen felt really cheap and the display arrived blurry… and the USB ports would recognize everything we connected to it, but when using the USB devices the entire computer would completely freeze for a while. Too bad, because I really, really like other Asus products that I own…

Slow but functional4
This PC isn’t going to win any speed or performance awards, but it works well, the touch screen is responsive, and it just plain works. I use it in my kitchen for watching Hulu, listening to Podcasts, and looking up recipes.

    Customer Reviews:

    Completely transforms your camera4
Ostensibly, the goal of a battery grip is to extend the amount of power you have for your camera. This grip does that, but simply buying an additional battery pack (which you’ll have to do anyway if you want to use the grip that way) would do the same job, wouldn’t it? It would - but the grip does a whole lot more:

This battery grip transforms an already excellent camera (the Canon 450D — or Rebel XSi as it is called in the US) into a great one. First of all, the grip is excellently designed, and people with medium to large hands like me can get a much better handle on the camera which, although nicely shaped, was a bit to small for my liking. Now, with the grip, this is transformed into a natural fit (it now feels similar to the Nikon D70, which I thought to be more comfortable to hold than the 450D). The advantages of using this grip are many:

First of all, you have double the amount of battery power available (provided, of course, you purchase an additional battery pack. The package does not contain any batteries). The grip is designed to hold one or two of the 450D’s battery packs at the same time. You do not have to use two packs. If you do, the packs do not have to carry the same amount of charge, and both packs are drained simultaneously. Even better, Canon has designed the grip to house a sled-like device they call ‘magazine’. This magazine holds one or two battery packs. The nice thing, however, is that it comes with a second magazine designed to hold 6 AA batteries. In a pinch, this can bridge the gap until you can re-charge the packs. Also, you can replace the magazine with an adapter to connect your camera to a normal power outlet (this is not included in the package). The magazine slides in from the left side (as seen from the camera’s back), making exchanging the magazines slightly awkward for right-handed people.

The grip is designed to slide into your camera from below, replacing the battery pack (you’ll have to remove the battery cover for this), and is secured in place with a screw. If there is room for improvement, then it would be here: I’d have liked a rubber environmental seal to better protect the camera’s now permanently open battery housing.
The grip almost doubles the weight of the camera, making it much better balanced with many of the larger lenses (e.g. the EF 100 Macro lens). Even better, when shooting in portrait orientaton, the grip provides its own shutter, aperture, AF lock and AF select buttons as well as another selector dial. To prevent accidental use of these buttons, the grip is also equipped with an ON/OFF switch (this switch will not operate the battery power). This is in addition to the large, separately molded grip now provided for this orientation. The bottom also houses a replicated tripod socket, and a mount for the handstrap. The latter is very useful, as I have found myself shooting more in portrait orientation, and have now set up the camera to use this as the default orientation.

The few small flaws I’ve found are this: I would have liked the ability of the grip to be able to also provide power to my (external) flash. Even more than that I would have welcomed a charger for the whole grip. Currently, you have to remove the battery packs from the magazine, charge them separately, and then re-insert them into the magazine, then insert the magazine into the grip. Also, you have to remove the camera’s battery cover from the camera — this forces you to carry the cover with you seperately should you want to use the camera without the grip. Finally, I would have preferred a slightly better environmental sealing than the rudimentary one that is provided. All things considered, though, these are small annoyances compared to the much better handling and feel the grip brings to the camera.

    To sum up:
This grip truly incrases the 450D’s already great features. I like the fact that I can choose to use one or two packs, and even swap them for AA batteries in a pinch. The whole assembly feels much improved, and shooting in portrait orientation has been immensely enhanced (both in feel and simplicity). I recommend this grip for anyone who wants to get more out of this camera, and especially for those who find themselves shooting often in portrait orientation.

Great addition to an already fantastic camera5
I already loved my Canon XSI, but this grip has really made the camera even more special.

Having the power of two LP-E5 batteries is a confidence booster to keep on shooting. If you’re reading this, you already know how long one lasts, having two… I’d guess for my usage it’d be good for 1200 shots or more. Your mileage may vary on how much you use the LCD, flash, IS lenses, Live View, etc, but if one is good enough, two is great! I’ve never even seen the battery indicator go down a bar when shooting with this grip and two LP-E5’s

For me, the battery power of one battery has always been more than enough. I often am in remote areas when I shoot, so the fact this grip will comes with a “sled” that accepts six AA batteries adds a comforting level of assurance that even if I run out of juice, a quick stop at any gas station in the country and I can pick up some AA’s and get back to shooting if need be.

Where this accessory really shines is in balance, handling and control of the camera.
The XSI is very small and light for a DSLR. I often shoot with quite heavy lenses that make the camera feel VERY front heavy and off balance. With two batteries as low as they can be with the grip on, the camera is feels a little better balanced with a heavy lens attached.
Handling feels much better with the grip as well in the standard landscape orientation. No more is my right pinky just hanging out in space, it can now help grip the camera. I have medium sized hands and had found the standard XSI grip just a bit small for my liking, this fills in the gap and it feels quite natural.
Control is the key selling point. If you have felt uncomfortable shooting in portrait orientation, this is your relief. It keeps you from having your right hand across your face in portrait orientation. You have shutter, selection wheel, AE lock, AF Point, and Exposure Compensation buttons in a very similar place for both portrait and landscape. This can’t be understated as I can now just flip the camera and do everything by feel when switching from landscape to portrait. Changing settings when shooting in portrait before always meant I had to take the camera away from my eye and switch it back to landscape to look down and work the controls on the same axis I was used to, then switching the orientation back before bringing the viewfinder back to my eye. With this grip, the controls are close to where you’re used to them being even when the camera is oriented 90 degrees off.

Compared to the price of the camera itself, this is a cheap accessory, and one I’ve found quite useful. There are some things that I don’t like about it however:
The grip adds about 1.75″ to the height of the camera. That means it doesn’t fit well or at all in some camera cases with the grip on.
There is no ISO button on the grip. I hate this as I always want to change the ISO to get it as low as I can for a given shot. Without the button for it on the grip, I’ve got to take down the camera and make the change where I’m used to changing it without taking my eye off the viewfinder while in landscape.
I wish you didn’t have to remove the battery door, it’s one more thing to loose. **Correction, please read my update at the bottom of this review!**
Purely aesthetic, but I’d like the grip to follow the lines of the camera better.

All in all, my biggest gripe is that it doesn’t have an ISO button. That being said, it’s been a great accessory that has made me like my XSI even more. At the Amazon price of $130, it’s a steal! If you would like to shoot longer (with an extra battery that is not included,) would like a backup power option for AA’s, or would like to shoot in portrait orientation more comfortably, you need this.

Hope this has helped with your decision.

    Update 9/23/09:
User D. Andrews states that the grip will store the battery door while in use. I tried it out and D. Andrews is correct. The battery door will store on the shaft going from the grip to the battery terminals in the camera body. There’s even an icon for it on the battery grip if you look carefully. Very good call D. Andrews! Thank you for the correction!

    A must have…5
This is a great item and a must have for the XSi. I got the XSi to pair with my 40d as a back-up and also for a small, compact dSLR for my fiance to use when helping me on photo shoots. The grip isnt necessary for everyone, but considering that just about every lens I use regularly is larger or the same size as the XSi, the grip definately makes me feel more comfortable. Adds more size to the camera with minimal weight. I am just waiting for Canon to release the battery magazines for it so that I can buy some spares. Also allows for my hands to fit comfortably on the camera instead of having to jam them in. Still doesnt feel right using the Canon 70-200 2.8L with this and the XSi though…

This is the one when martin and gina acquire married find this net them all they were on to something they could of beat the cosby indicate in my concept if it would of went on longer 2 more seasons then gina says sexual harrastment then the explain ends the most believable as a couple on a sitcom

Season 3 of “Martin” definitely picks up where Season 2 left off. Although there are some serious themes (Martin struggling to accumulate himself as he prepares for he and Gina’s marriage, Tommy and Pam finally getting together), the laughs are endless in this third “Martin” DVD released…in 2007. Some of the memorable moments include Martin’s misadventures in the work force, including a stint as a floor-buffer, Martin and Gina going undercover to gather out what Tommy does for a living, Martin’s confrontation with a child claiming to be his son, Martin’s refusal to pay his rent, which leaves he and the gang in chills during a substantial snowstorm, a 70’s themed “Player’s Ball” the gang holds to effect an primitive movie theatre, and of course the wedding episode. So, the classic episodes are mild aplenty, but probably not on the same level as the classic Season 1 and 2. It wouldn’t be until the second half of the series (seasons 4 and 5), when the quality of the explain would diminish, eventually sealing the show’s fate.

NOTE: Two years after I wrote this review, I am jubilant that a DVD version is finally available. Hopefully, this film will now receive the recognition and appreciation it clearly deserves. I have nothing to revise in the review which follows.

I saw this film when it was first released in 1960 and saw it again recently, charmed as before by the narrative line and the excellent acting under Fred Zinnemann’s lustrous direction. Here’s the situation: Ida (Deborah Kerr) and Paddy (Robert Mitchum) Carmody and son Sean (Michael Anderson, Jr.) are sheep drovers in Australia in the 1920s, proceeding from one job to the next. Ida and son yearn to decide down permanently somewhere (anywhere, really) whereas Paddy prefers itinerant roaming. Along the diagram, they encounter Rupert Venneker (Peter Ustinov), a frail sea captain with aristocratic sensibilities. Most of the film focuses on their tenure on the Halstead ranch during which they become friends with Mrs. Firth (Glynis Johns), an innkeeper to whom Venneker is coyly attracted. During the course of the film, not powerful happens, really. Its much charm is generated by the developing relationships between and among the lead characters.

Others have praised this film for capable reasons of their hold. Here are mine. First, there is tall and authentic human interest in the differences between Ida’s and Paddy’s contradictory definitions of “home.” For lack of better terms, between settling down and exciting on. Also, in collaboration with Zinnemann, Jack Hildyard enriches the development of the account with cinematography which is compellingly, indeed exquisitely appropriate to that time and space. Finally, all of the lead actors seem perfectly matched with the roles they play…especially Mitchum.

Briefly, I now piece some thoughts about him, first because he invests Paddy with a wholesome appeal which was for me unexpected, given the Mitchum persona as in Night of the Hunter (1955) and Home from the Hill (also 1960) and then, years later, in his portrayals of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Stunning (1975) and The Grand Sleep (1978) . His understated, highly-disciplined portrayal of Paddy is comparable with Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Warren Schmidt. Although Kerr and Johns received an Academy Award nomination, Mitchum did not. I have always opinion he was under-appreciated as an actor.

Set in the 1920s and about a family of Irish itinerant sheepherders, this film has panoramic views of Australia (cinematography by Jack Hildyard), a excellent script, and a diverse and inviting cast; the sheep also are terrific, and there are many glimpses of kangaroos, koalas and more, all dwelling to an upbeat derive by Dimitri Tiomkin. The film also shows the backbreaking labor of shearing the sheep, and the hard life and hard drinking of the people who do it.
It has its section of drama, poignancy, and humor, the latter usually thanks to Peter Ustinov, who puts in another memorable performance as a British wanderer who is always able to extricate himself from romantic entanglements.
Deborah Kerr shines as Ida, the tough but sensitive wife who stands by her man through thick and thin (mostly thin) . Robert Mitchum is estimable as her irresponsible husband, as is Michael Anderson Jr. as their son, and Glynis Johns adds her irrepressible charm as a pub owner.

Though not quite on the level of director Fred Zinnemann’s best work (like “High Noon”, “A Man for all Seasons”, and “Day of the Jackal”), it smooth has his masterful touch, and is a splendid film, well worth viewing.
It was nominated for Best Actress, Recount, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actress (Johns), losing out to Elizabeth Taylor in the first category, and “The Apartment” and “Elmer Gantry” in the rest.
“The Sundowners” is solid entertainment from one of the mountainous directors of the 20th century, and total running time is 133 minutes.
